I’m in a band…
May 16th, 2005 by Jon
I’m a drummer! I play in a band called The Adventures of Bubbaloo. This band is based in Norwich. I am the only band member not currently living in Norwich. This makes, and always has made, playing in the band a little tricky. I guess I’m one of the lesser requirements in the band. I don’t mind this. The other guys can get together and have a fairly decent jam without me being present. That said, it rocks a lot more when drums are in the equation!
I’ve been playing drums for several years now, maybe as many as six. I’m not brilliant, but I do love playing them and I keep a beat when asked nicely. When I was much younger I started learning to play piano. This was more down to my parents than me. They paid and forced me to go, and I went. Both my brother and sister also learnt to play. Being a twin, the duets always went down quite well at piano concerts. I’m sure I learnt a few things over the years, and I maybe even enjoyed it once in a while, but my desire to play an instrument has always been for the drums.
So, when the time came, I rebeled against the olds and bought myself a second-hand black Honor drum kit with some cymbals made out of tin-foil! I got it from a music shop in Colchester. It was quite dark inside, and the drums were on the top floor. Who thought that one up? The biggest instruments in the shop, and you have to lug them up and down several flights of stairs! Anyway, I got it home, set it up, and rocked!
I had this drum kit for a little while and even took it to university with me. The students around my block didn’t appreciate it too much. It probably wasn’t even the noise. I think it was more down to the fact that I could only play a very limited number of patterns, namely drum rolls around the kit! Sorry Su!
I had a few lessons, never really jammed, and failed to progress very far even with practice. My solution to these set backs was to blame my kit and buy a new one! A better one. A bigger one. A shiney one! This came about after I dropped out of uni to work, but the student loan company still paid me a large sum of money. Thank you for putting me in more debt!
The new kit was a Tama Rockstar Custom finished in Custom Blue (looks green). It’s a really beautiful kit. I’ve tried to look after it as much as possible, but it’s aquired some character over the years. At least I can say it’s down to gigging…almost! The cherries on the top are Zildjian symbols. XBT Pro, or something like that. I really should know. They sound ok, but I’m always tempted to trade them in for something another notch up.
Right, well. I’m a drummer. I’ve got a drum kit. I’m in a band. We’re quite good. We could be tighter, but we still rock! Whether you’ll get to hear much more of us is another question. It’s complicated.
The point is, we rock!
This post will be edited to be less crap at a later date!
