Hunting for houses
Apr 26th, 2005 by Jon
You’d think that hunting for a house or a flat would be a relatively simple affair. It’s not like hunting deer or blue whales, is it? Houses and flats stay right where they are. They don’t run behind trees or dive to great depths, and they’re not even illegal to hunt! All I need are a few humane house traps to allow me to capture the ideal place, look after it for a bit, before releasing it back into the wild with the rest of its kind.
I hate house hunting, but it’s one of those things you have to get used to. It all started back in the year 2000 when things were ‘oh so simple’ (and cheap!) and people were dancing a little bit like it was 1999, but in a slightly cooler fashion! I was living with 3 other guys and one german shepherd, called Hans, in self-catering university accomodation. We decided to live together for the next academic year and set about a’hunting for a house! It didn’t take us too long before tracking down an old chap working on a house who pointed us in the direction of another one of his properties. It seemed ok, it had a back yard for the german shepherd, who’s name was actually Nico and was a dog, and it was located well for university. Oh, and the rent was cheap….
…Too cheap it would turn out, as the landlord eventually threatened us and illegally evicted us from the property. Just what you need in your second year of university at only 19 years of age! Anyway, scared for my life and homeless, things took an immediate downward plunge leading to my withdrawel from university and a rather severe decline in my health! All a bit shit really!
Anyway, I digress….house hunting is a fact of life for the majority of students. Sometimes you get lucky. Other times you get evicted! Sometimes you just appreciate a roof over your head and a back door, and windows and stuff.
These past few months I’ve been lucky enough to live in a brilliant house. It’s been a pretty naff year, but in a great location, location, location! I hope my next pad will offer the same luxuries with less of the hassle. Wish me luck! Oh, and if you live in Nottingham and want to live with me, get in touch!
