I bought myself a 4GB, green flavoured Apple iPod mini this weekend. It’s so hard not to be impressed by them in every aspect. The design is beautifully stylish. The interface is second to none. The build quality is superb. It has a calendar, an alarm clock, some games, a belt clip, and even plays music!
I’ve always liked the iPods, but have never been able to afford them. Heck, I probably can’t afford this one, but what’s done is done, and there’s no going back (ok, so I could take it back, but I don’t want to!) So why have I decided to buy one now? And why the iPod mini? Good questions!
Basically, my love of all things Apple has taken over my life. First was the Mac mini, bought because I already had a keyboard, mouse and monitor. Next was an Apple keyboard, bought partly because my old keyboard didn’t look as cool as a pure white Apple one! And now I’ve gone and got myself an iPod mini.
It was really a toss up between the new iPod Shuffle and the iPod mini, but after weighing up the pros and cons, there was no contest. The extra 3GB of storage plus a screen for meer ¬£40 more swung the deal. The next decision to make was which colour, and whether I should have it engraved or not. The latter question was soon answered with a firm ‘no’. Personalising it would make it harder to sell should that time ever come. The colour question had be stumped though.
Silver, Blue, Pink and Green. These are the colours of the rainbow iPod mini’s. Blue was out almost straight away. Those of you that know anything about me at all will probably know that I have a phobia of all things blue. That’s not strictly true anymore, as I own a blue shirt, blue tie, and a blue pair of jeans. Anyway, that’s beside the point. Blue was out. One down, three to go! My next nomination for eviction was Pink. For a split second I thought it might be kind of cool to own a Pink iPod. Then I remembered I wasn’t a girl. Ok, so far so good, although I should point out that at the time, getting this far in the decision making process had already taken about an hour or so! Silver or Green? Silver or Green? Daddy or Chips? There’s nothing wrong with either. Especially on the iPod mini’s anodised body. However, I figured Silver is probably the more common of the two, and I’ve always liked being a bit different so opted for the Green. Done!
It was late into the night by the point as I headed over to the Apple Store to check out my shopping cart. I emptied the cinema displays and powerbooks that somehow keep making their way back in. I carefully placed my 4 GB green iPod mini into the cart and off I went. Just before purchasing I recalled that I could wait a few hours and pop into town to buy one in person from my local Apple reseller, KRCS. And that’s just what I did! ¬£139 well spent, I’m sure you’ll agree.
